The juicer and the ants

Some fifty years ago, my housemate left his Champion juicer on the kitchen counter when he went out of town for a few days. He had made carrot juice but neglected to clean the machine. Before long, the ants discovered it.

I remember standing there, fascinated by the coordination and efficiency of their operation. Ants streamed in and out of the juicer in a steady flow, each seeming to have a purpose and a destination. Their movements were orderly, deliberate, and remarkably disciplined.

After a while, I decided it was time to clean up. The moment I lifted the juicer from the counter, the scene changed completely. What had been a well-organized procession of ants moving in unison instantly dissolved into confusion. The orderly rhythm vanished, replaced by chaos and frenzy as the ants scattered across the countertop, seemingly unsure of where to go or what to do next.
