Dave Valentin, a giant of the flute and a big influence and inspiration to me died today. He was only 64. I started listening to Dave from his very first album, Legends, and spent many hours playing along with it. I was fortunate enough to get to see him play meet him a few times, both in New York and in San Francisco. The first time was after a show in New York circa 1980. I waited for him to walk by on his way out and as he came up to me he said, "Whatcha' want to know?" - I think I asked him if he had any advice about how best to spend my time practicing or what to work on, and he said, "Just listen."
