I just watched a black-and-white clip of Bill Evans playing Nardis in what looks like someone’s living room, with Eddie Gomez on bass. It instantly took me back—playing that tune with Clay countless times, remembering Bob Bauer (who, for reasons of his own, always called it “Snardi”) walking up the street to sit in with us at an Ethiopian spot called Rassella’s in San Francisco. But more than anything, it brought me back to a rooming house in New Jersey, second floor, sitting on the bed with my little radio the day I heard the news: Bill Evans had died, September 15, 1980. He was only 51.
