Baccarat redux – part 5

I don’t hear much English around the baccarat tables, mostly just Chinese. I’m surrounded by a cacophony of sounds of which there isn’t a word I can grasp. That is, except for one that I occasionally hear shouted out, “Monkey.”

The Chinese refer to face cards as “Monkey”, and call for them when they want a 10 point card either to bust the opposing hand or to make theirs win. It’s a curious moniker, given that all the face cards are Caucasian. Not sure if this is an intentional derogatory, racist or species slight to the colonial powers of the past or just an innocent, endearing label on the part of the Chinese, but it is what they say, that’s for sure!
